At the end of May we headed to Durham (less than 30 miles away). We heard that this museum was supposed to be one of a kind. Well, it is. There is the standard museum building, but it has some items that I think are interesting. There is a whole section devoted to our desire to get to the moon. There is a lunar module (2 stories tall), a ship used for testing - to train the astronauts to return to earth, as well as Alan Shepards space suit. There are also sections devoted to children and science experiments (i.e. make a 13 foot tall tornado). But it doesn't stop there. Outside there is a playground with a whole section devoted to sound (i.e. drums to hit, metal items to bang). There is also a small farm with sheep, a donkey, pig, turkey, rabbits, cow, goats, etc... As you keep walking you come to the indoor butterfly garden and insectarium. If you time it right you can watch them release new butterflies. There is also a train, which we had to ride of course. It goes through a metal 'tunnel' which is the highlight of the trip (smirk). There is a large outdoor section devoted to larger animals (i.e. black bears, red fox, otters, frogs, etc...). As you are trying to get back to the building you come to the Wind section. There is a huge pond with sailboats that the kids can 'drive' as long as there is wind. There are lots of small experiements where you can play with "wind". Needless to say you could spend all day there. We are planning to attend tomorrow morning (July 31st, our 2 year anniversary of closing on this house). I'm sure there will be more pictures to come.

If you look closely you will see her taking care of her brother :)
